Broken Compass

I’ve been spending the last few days boxing up my things as I’m moving house soon. It’s a soul destroying task, and as you’d expect, I’ve been distracting myself with other things, like songwriting.

Here’s what I came up with.

A song about the directionless melancholy of the individual.

You said you’d wait for me
I said I’d get there on my own,
But not before I knew exactly where to go

But now it seems to me
My compass spins without control
And every star winks out and I am left alone

And every road I walk is just another
Blind shot in the dark,
No route, no maps, no goals

I’ve followed in the footsteps of the many
Great and good, but no;
This is not me.

And so I find myself
About a million miles from home
And still no closer to the place I need to go.

Are you still waiting there?
Will you come and meet me on the road?
The burning bridges show exactly where to go

And every road I walk is just another
Blind shot in the dark,
No route, no maps, no goals

And yet I cut my own path to whatever
Place I want to go,
Cause I am free!

I’m free.

Solitary havens mark my passage through the dark;
All abandoned, but not forgotten, there I left my mark.

Forever I shall wander now, it’s too late to start again
But for what it’s worth just know I’ll always be your friend.

Adventure update

We’re about 500km and 5 hours away from our destination. We’ve been in the road for 9 hours and we’re realising that France has less service stations per kilometre than the uk…

Time slicing our driving, the view of the stars is incredible. If only the view of the road was as good… the French don’t seem to have cat’s eyes as aids.

Hopefully we won’t run into problems at the Swiss border,  seeing as none of us has a passport.

We’ll burn that bridge when we come to it. Onward to freedom!

This place is not here

If I was tainted, would you tell me?
If the picture we painted
Of sainted bliss
Turned out to be anything less
Than what we had imagined,
Would you tell me?

And what if I told you that I still have those dreams?
Of answering the call unseen
And escaping this life unclean
And sleeping rough between
Sand and sky
With hands held high,
And I, and I and I
STILL HEAR THE VOICES…

However faint.

Cutting loose my restraints
And confirming the taint.
So I ask again:
Would you tell me?

100,000 wasted lives

Force fed lies,
Brainwashed children;
Mobilising silent armies.
Fill the void
With slick deception;
Shut their minds and damn their souls.

Claim your holy book is nothing but the truth
You're slowly sewing shut their eyes,
And if they question you, you'll punish them for peeling
Back the layers of your lies

Indoctrinate them so they'll
Never question you and
You can carry on controlling
Generations,
Building up your armies,
Gathering your strength
And lying to the fucking world.

They've built temples founded on broken faith.
Rise, fight them, blinded by years of hate.
Stand, reclaim what was taken from you.
Eyes open, all they said was untrue.

Cut through their lies,
Open your eyes, find the truth.
Smash the temples,
Cast them down with the proof.

Moulded firm,
Grown up ignorant;
The youth in turn replace the generals.
Circles closed,
Torches passed on;
Hundred thousand wasted lives.

Closed your mind for so long lies become the truth,
Why can nobody see your proof?
Scientists are all wrong! Why would preachers lie
About the book that holds the truth?

Wake up, shut your book
Of fucking lies and find the
Answers to the questions
For so long denied.
There's no conspiracy,
There's no satanic plan,
So smash the circle break out now.

The drug of the nation

MY students often get shocked when they discover that I don’t have a TV. Almost guaranteed to be among their responses is: “What do you DO? Don’t you get BORED?”

Well, let’s see.

What do I do?

  • Read books
  • Program computers
  • Play guitar
  • Sing
  • Read more books
  • Write poetry
  • Update my blog
  • Read science journals
  • Read more books
  • Ride BMX
  • Go exploring
  • Imagine myself to be in various fantasy environments while I go exploring
  • Paint
  • Build models
  • Listen to music
  • Write songs
  • Play games with friends
  • Talk to friends
  • Drink coffee
  • Consider the unanswerable questions of the universe
  • Investigate the unanswerable questions of the universe at my local library
  • (Occasionally) answer, through research, questions of the universe I had previously thought unanswerable
  • Walk
  • Run
  • Read more books
  • Smile as I think how much more fulfilling my life is since I broke free from the grasp of TV (and Facebook and all that other crap).

Do I get bored? Hell no. When do I have time to get bored?
